PayPal barcode payment decreases retail wait time

Payment for goods in store just got easier thanks to online payment service PayPal. PayPal is the familiar method of payment online, which thousands of users have as adopted as standard over the last decade or so, especially users of online marketplace eBay. So to break into the standard retail shopping arena has taken a lot of thought. And the way they’ve decided to do it is by using barcodes.

Shoppers will no longer have to wait in long queues at the checkout when they have chosen the goods they want to purchase, PayPal have a plan where shop assistants can checkout goods for customers without them needing to wait at the till.

The new system uses a PayPal software app, which is downloaded onto the customer’s smartphone. When a customer wants to purchase an item at the shop, the shop assistant needs to scan the item using their handheld barcode scanner. The customer can then launch their PayPal payment app on their smartphone which displays a unique barcode. The shop assistant can then scan this barcode on the phone’s screen and the transaction is complete.
